And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of this who bring good news!" Romans 10:15

Salem United Methodist Church

After a joyful worship service Sunday morning with Salem United Methodist Church - Wexford, PA, they kept the spirit of being the church going and built about 30 feet of ramp to prepare for the homecoming of a church member, after a lengthy and continuing recuperation from surgery. God is good and gave them sun when rain was expected.

In Mission Together

It would be helpful to give you an update on how our brothers and sisters in Lithuania are doing in their support of Ukrainian refugees as well as other information. Please read below as Remigijus shares several topics and prayer requests. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jeanie Kurka Reimer. “In Mission Together” Partnership Coordinator for Lithuania, Latvia & Estonia @ jreimer@umcmission.org Cell: 920-851-5485

FRIENDS OF LITHUANIA ZOOM GATHERING:

We hope you will join us for the next Friends of Lithuania zoom gathering on Monday, June 6th at 11:00 am CDT, 12:00 noon EDT and 7:00 pm Lithuania time. More information and a zoom link will follow closer to the date.

UPDATE FROM DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT REMIGIJUS MATULATIS:

Continued support of refugees

Remigijus shared that Ukrainian refugees continue to come into Lithuania. Each Methodist Church has a plan for what they do to support the refugees. Some have refugees staying in the church buildings while others have refugees staying in homes. Remigijus shared a situation where he took one family to the store to buy essential items and food and the cost was 600 euros ($650) to buy just the basics. To add to the challenge, costs are increasing exponentially in Lithuania (and all over Eastern and Western Europe) with energy, gas, food, etc. making this an added layer of problems to deal with both for themselves as well as providing support to the refugees. The people in the Methodist church are also a support to the refugees in getting them connected to resources they will need in addition to getting them registered with the Lithuanian government. Remigijus shared there are two Ukrainian refugees coming to the Kaunas church who are musicians and, because of the funds coming in from US partners, he is able to pay these two men for their music ministry in the church. Remigijus shared a story of one family who is now staying in one of the apartments owned by the Methodist Church, and they were so grateful for having a place to stay. They have a son with Downs Syndrome and the chaos of their lives has been hard on their son. Having stability in their living situation has helped immensely. Remigijus also shared that he has arranged with the Guest House in Kaunas to house refugees for 2-3 nights when they first come to Lithuania so they will have a bed to sleep in, a warm shower, etc. for a few nights before it is determined where they will stay.

Jeanie discussed how in the many conversations she is having with people in the Baltics, they are expressing fear and anxiety regarding the possibility that they might go back under Soviet rule if Ukraine is not successful. Added to the other layers of challenges they are now facing, many are also dealing with “historical trauma” from the past years of Soviet occupation. Historical trauma is when people are subject to cumulative emotional harm caused by a long-term traumatic event, such as 50 years of Soviet occupation. With the constant reminders of what is happening presently with the war atrocities, this is triggering many memories of the Soviet occupation years.

Prayer Requests: Remigijus asked for prayers for his wife Kristina as she deals with continued health issues. Also, prayers for the actions taken by a Special Central Conference held on April 30th to change the Ukrainian Methodist Church's association from the Eurasian Episcopal area to the Nordic and Baltic Episcopal area administered by Bishop Alsted. Continued prayers for the Ukrainian people for strength, protection and peace for their country.

Missionaries in Residence

Marian Bundy Taylor celebrates her 100th birthday!

From James W. (Pete) Spitzkeit, a retired missionary

“Marian Bundy Taylor, a retired missionary, celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends on Saturday, March 26, 2022. She served in Korea at the Tai Wha Social Center in Seoul until the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. On June 24, a day before the war, she married the Rev. Lyman ‘Bud’ Taylor, who had arrived in Korea in 1949. A few days later, they were in Japan along with other missionary evacuees from the war. They decided to complete their commitment by serving in Japan as teachers in Japanese schools. Later, they returned to the US and served local churches in the New York Annual Conference until they retired at the Bishop Wicke Health Center in Shelton, CT. I think it is accurate to say that she is the first of the post-World War 2 missionaries to Korea to reach 100 years of age. Congratulations Marian!”

The above clipping was provided by Stephen Payne, second son of Don and Adrah Payne, missionaries to Korea from 1948 to 1961. Third from right, in a plaid dress, Marian. Last, on the right, in a white long-sleeve shirt, is the Rev. Lyman Taylor.

Honoring Retiring Missionaries

On April 20, we celebrated the lives and ministries of three retiring missionaries during a Global Ministries mid-week devotion called “Take a Breath.” Ardell and Gordon Graner, who served in Bolivia and the Dominican Republic, and John Elmore (and Cristina), who served in the Dominican Republic and Chile. Together, they have served for a combined 85 years! Thank you, Ardell and Gordon (right), John and Cristina (left)!

Malaria efforts paying off in Angola

The United Methodist Church's Imagine No Malaria campaign is making a difference in the African nation of Angola. Community awareness and preventive treatment have improved, boosting the health of mothers and babies.

“I want to start by thanking the team for helping me and my community,” Cassua said to the program evaluator. “Last year, my family suffered several cases of malaria. Now, with the United Methodist Imagine No Malaria campaign, we’ve learned how to get rid of pools of stagnant water, clear bushes from around our houses and remove solid waste to reduce the presence of mosquitoes nearby.”

She was impressed by the patient Quessua United Methodist youth volunteers who shared information about how malaria is spread and the importance of sleeping under mosquito nets every night. She even decided to talk to her son about taking the training and joining the team.

Angola ranks as one of the 10 most affected countries for malaria cases and deaths in the world (World Health Organization 2020 World Malaria Report). It is the primary cause of mortality, as well as 35% of the demand for medical services and 40% of hospital admissions. The United Methodist Health Board of East Angola has steadfastly worked on prevention of, treatment for and community education about malaria since its formation in 2011. More...

  1. We are at the highest positivity rate; it is difficult to find a place to be tested for COVID. We recommend that volunteers with pre-existing conditions and those in vulnerable age groups do not travel under the actual circumstances.

  2. Insurance: Has to covered COVID or would not be eligible to serve.

  3. ReHace requirement: PCR test (No antigen test) 48 hours before arriving on the Island.

  4. To enter the island, the Government is requiring a negative test with no more than 48 hours

    before arriving on the Island.

Updated Volunteer Guidelines

Applications are being accepted for volunteers. REHACE, will only allow three teams of 8 per week, whereby each team will be split into two work teams. Protect Yourself as Water Rises

Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States. Climate change makes flooding even more likely as seas rise and storms become more severe.
report released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in February shows that sea levels along the U.S. coastline will rise 10 to 12 inches over the next 30 years. The report predicts that damaging floods will occur, on average, more than 10 times as often as it does today.
Research by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) comparing data from 1965 and 2015 shows floods have become larger in rivers and streams across large parts of the Northeast and Midwest. The research also shows that the Northeast, along with the Pacific Northwest and northern Great Plains, face more frequent large floods.
That’s why it’s important to be ready for floods, whether they are from a thunderstorm, snow melt, hurricane, or other weather event.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Learn about flood risks in your area. Check with your local government to learn the history of flooding in your area and follow their recommendations.
  • Make a plan for your household, including your pets, so that you and your family know what to do, where to go, and how to protect yourselves from flooding.
  • Turn around. Don’t drown. Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away. Move to higher ground if you see flood water ahead. Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
  • Understand the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning. The National Weather Service often issues a flood watch before a flood warning. A watch means you should begin preparing for a possible evacuation because flooding is possible. A flood warning means flooding is occurring or about to occur, and you should take immediate action to protect yourself.
  • Consider buying flood insurance if you live in a flood zone. Flood insurance is a separate policy from homeowners and renters insurance. FEMA manages the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). To purchase flood insurance, call your insurance company or insurance agent. If you need help finding a provider, go to gov/flood-insurance-provider or call the NFIP at 877-336-2627.

For more tips and protective actions, visit www.ready.gov/floods and https://community.fema.gov/ProtectiveActions/s/article/Flood.

Church and Community Workers

Missionary Service is working to develop, at least, five new placements for Church and Community Workers (CCW) this year. CCWs are commissioned missionaries of Global Ministries, who, in response to God’s call, are devoted to uplifting the poor and disenfranchised in rural and urban areas throughout the United States. They work to change the social inequities of poverty, racial injustice and domestic violence. As the name implies, CCWs take the church into the community and bring the community into the church. They normally serve in a project for six to 10 years. For additional information please contact Sonia Brum at SBrum@umcmission.org Flyer.
